Is It True Ppl Like Us With A Blood Disorder Are Told To Not Fly, Or Go To High Altitudes?
As others have stated, I fly with PV quite a lot. It is not a bog deal provided you take easy precautions. Getting up and moving about every hour reduces risks of thrombosis for everyone. It is more important when you have a MPN. Some do take more than just the daily aspirin for long flights. Some wear compression socks.
Spending extended periods of time at very high altitudes with lower oxygen levels causes the body to increase erythropoietin, increasing erythropoiesis. This could be an issue for people with PV if their erythrocytosis is not well controlled. If you spend much time at high altitude, expect HCT to increase.
Suggest that you speak to your MPN care team for case specific advice. Note that the question is not "should I do this" (which puts the doc in a spot). Rather, the question would be "What are the risks/issues? What precautions do I need to take?"
Wishing you happy travels.
Steve, you always give us knowledgeable info. Please keep helping all of us understand better. Thanks
I have 5 flights booked already. And the only reason my 6th flight is not booked is because the computer won’t let me book more than a year out. I LIVE everyday as if it’s my last. Key word is LIVE
I fly quite a bit as well including long haul. Same as Peter, make sure I can stretch, have enough legroom, and not wear tight clothing. My MPN Dr says both flying and high altitude hiking etc are ok. Altitude is something I think about now though in planning hiking trips, I have been a bit more cautious on which ones I do just in case.
Can’t stop living in the meantime but my specialist is mostly concerned with clotting in my PV. Keeping the reds in order is paramount to her - consequently me too. I travel extra legroom though, or business for v long flights
My Platelets Are Between (Phone Number Can Only Be Seen By myMPNteam Users) Is It Ok To Fly? Thanks In Advance
