I get ocular migraines sometimes when I play soccer.....much fewer now that I'm taking aspirin and keeping better hydrated.

Hi Adie, I have ocular migraines w/o headache also. Also, see flashes of light and blurred vision. It is a symptom of PV.

I had my first attack of ocular migraine 13 years ago and since then once or twice a year. But after being diagnosed with ET and starting to take baby aspirin at the beginning of 2020 they have disappeared! Couldn't be more grateful :).

I have had acephalgic (silent/painless) visual migraines, which are not related to PV but to surgery for a brain tumor in my occipital lobe. it is correct that there are types of visual migraine that can be related to PV. This is related to possible microvascular issues either in the brain or in the retina. Note that there are two types of migraines that can occur. Visual Migraines are based in the brain and typically affect both eyes. Ocular migraines are based in the retina and typically affect only one eye. There is good information on this topic. here is one example.

Treating this type of migraine requires a proper assessment to determine the cause. Typically, this would involve a MPN Specialist, an ophthalmologist, and a neurologist. I did the assessment with all of the above and a neuro-ophthalmologist as well. I worked to ensure collaboration between all of the providers. In my case, treatment was to identify/minimize the triggers (too much blue screen and bright flashing lights) and treat episodes with Ubrelvy (a CGRP inhibitor).

Finding the right approach for you will require a proper assessment with the appropriate care team. All the best making this happen.

Hi MaryBeth, I was getting numerous silent migraines, didn’t know why. Had CVA and silent migraines cleared. Migraines were only annoying, oh well! APS is easy to check with bloodwork. Glad you seem well!
