Treatment For Sore Mouth, Tongue, Lips?
I Started hydroxyurea in May. A few days in the last few months, I felt my mouth burn… rinsing with baking soda helped and it went away… now 3 months later, my mouth and tongue are quite sore and I need to vaseline my lips frequently…am worried about getting cankers!…the baking soda rinse is barely containing the soreness. Eating Yogourt and soothing food helps, but only temporarily….any treatment ideas?
Hi Pat4,
Have you had your B-12 tested recently? Sometimes deficiency can cause the mouth sores and cracking. Not sure if Hydroxyurea causes a deficiency or not.
Pat4, for dry or chapped lips from HU, Dr.Dan’s Cortibalm for lips works really well. Chapped lips felt better in a day.
I did have ET from 2002 - 2014 and was treated with 2 different medications and one was hydroxyurea. I started treatment for myleofibrosis in 2014.. didn’t notice dry mouth any of those years with hydro, but in last 2 to 3 yrs I have had very dry mouth. I had histoplasmosis of the tonsil about 5 years ago and then I had something they thought was thrush in my mouth about a yr and a half ago. It seems better at times but doesn’t go away. I’ve used nyastatin mouthwash and creams. My daughter in law suggested biotene dry mouth moisturizing gel. It helps relieve my dry mouth but doesn’t get rid of the rough feeling in my mouth. It also comes in a mouthwash. There are off brands of the name brand I believe at Walmart. Unfortunately as I have learned over the many years of having blood disorders, that there are numerous side effects that cause numerous skin and internal issues. Hope something in my comments helps.
When that started with me my doctor stopped the Hydrea. That Hydrea is notorious for causing those symptoms. There are other treatments you can take for your ET.
Yes.platelets dropping nicely , but can’t take aspirin or I bleed.
