I have been taking HU for PV for past 3 yrs. Lately my WBC and platelets have been increasing despite that. Does anyone know if supplementing with Vitamin D or C can help?

Members discussed whether vitamin D supplementation might help manage rising white blood cell counts and platelets in myeloproliferative neoplasms, with one member reporting their platelets dropped 110 points into normal range after starting 2000 mg of vitamin D daily, though they acknowledged the connection remains uncertain. Several members shared that vitamin D3 may reduce platelets and is often recommended by doctors for bone health, with dosages ranging from 5000 to 15000 IU daily, while cautioning that levels should be monitored by a doctor to avoid risks like kidney stones or toxicity. A recurring theme was the hope that vitamins could offer an alternative or complement to increasing Hydroxyurea doses, balanced with the reality that research is limited and individual results vary widely.

P.S. I just read an article on this website about Vitamin D and MPN's. Sounds good except as usual the situation is complex. I didn't know that Vitamin D can cause kidney stones. My sister had emergency surgery for that a couple of years ago. But that won't stop me from taking D3, as even my internist recommended it.

That's great news, Joanne. I wonder if the decrease is due to the Vitamin D. Who knows. Hope yours stay down. Best wishes!

Hi Janice, thanks for the advice about Vitamin D. I started taking 2000 mg of Vitamin D a couple weeks ago. just had my blood work taken a couple days ago. Interestingly enough, my platelets went down 110 pts and are now in normal range - for the first time in 10 months! We need to keep sharing our experiences to help one another navigate a confusing illness. Thanks, Pat and Janice.
