I am 71 years old. For 3 years I've been taking Hydroxyurea for ET caused by a Cal-R mutation. I had no idea of the possible ET complications until recently joining this group. My question, regarding vision: My optometrist is happy with how my eyes look. I take a Lutein supplement at her suggestion. Could that be helpful for people with ET?

Members exchanged mixed experiences about whether eye supplements like Lutein are helpful for people with ET, with some doctors recommending them and others saying they don't work, leaving the group acknowledging the confusion that comes with contradictory medical advice. Several members emphasized the importance of regular eye exams and staying current with vaccines like RSV to protect against infections, especially for those with low white blood cell counts. A recurring theme was gratitude for peer support and shared knowledge within the community, as many members felt their doctors provided minimal information about ET and its potential complications, making groups like this essential for understanding their condition and finding practical ways to manage daily life.

Hello again Melissa. I don't know if I'm allowed to say this here, but plunging forward: I'm a secular Jew, tied to my roots but not actively practicing the religion. I have got to avoid details in the news right now as depression and stress aren't good for me. Also, it's surprising how little info we get from our doctors. I think my hematologist, although a good one, simply wants blind obedience. If I ask about something I've read on the Internet from a good source, he has said, "And how many days did YOU spend in medical school?" But I want and need to know more than how many HU to take per day. So I am happy to find this group and will check out Facebook as well. Also: the brighter side of having a slow-growing form of cancer that may shorten my life is that it's motivating me to finish some long-unfinished classical pieces at the piano. Wish I could play for everyone here. Currently I entertain once a month for an adoring audience of patients and staff at a skilled nursing facility. Makes me very happy to do this. Hope I can continue doing it. Love, Janice

My retinal doctor told me the supplements don't work. I never took any.

Thanks Janice! Same to you! We have warmer weather today and it is supposed to rain! I just got back from another 5 mile walk with my dogs. I feel so much better after I walk! I haven't made it to the store yet but will definitely get the salon patch! I learned when I moved up to Eugene that no one uses an umbrella! LOL! We walk in the rain as long as it is not a monsoon! Good for you for sleeping in! I actually slept in too. I got up at 7. I usally get up at 5:30! Hang in there and have a great day too!

Janice you are right. I had an eye problem before I had ET. I had a blister on my eye brought on by my getting hit by a truck on the sidewalk! He told me there wasn't any supplement that would really help. I asked him again with my ET and he told me the same answer. I am not having any eye problems caused by ET though.

Hello mjpm2406. I'm at an early stage with ET. Platelets started around 700; were down to about 390 at last blood test. You face more challenges. I hope all goes well. I asked my optometrist if she recommended any supplements to avoid eye problems, and she said Lutein was the only one. Ask your eye doctor about that if you wish. Mainly I want to say: I recently got an RSV vaccine shot at a local drug store, to lessen the effect of any future respiratory infection. I didn't ask my doctors beforehand as they've recommended all previous vaccine shots for me. I suggest you ask your cancer doctors if you should get that shot, if you haven't already had it. This particular shot was easy for me in terms of after-effects.
With best wishes, Janice
