Hydroxyurea - Anyone's Experience Of Taking 500mg Daily
Thank you Janice and Blanch, that's really helpful.
Reactions to meds vary greatly. I hope you can continue with no side effects. Hydroxyurea (HU) appears to be the first choice for treatment, from what I and others experienced. Some people have no issues with it for years; others can't take it at all. Age may make a difference. I am age 72 and have been treating Cal-R mutation ET since the summer of 2022. Was taking 500 mg. HU daily with no problems, but then had major digestive issues throughout 2023 when a second pill was added on some days of the week. My former hematologist insisted I had no alternative other than HU. I switched in December 2023 to Dr. Noam Drazin, a hematologist who is an MPN specialist. I'm feeling much better as he immediately added Anagrelide while gradually cutting back on HU. Platelets remain down with side effects almost eliminated. As of yesterday's CBC, my platelets are at 424 and meds are reduced to a daily Anagrelide plus HU three times a week. I think HU will soon be eliminated altogether. I like the gradual approach, and it's working.
I have been taking 500 mg of Hydroxyurea once a day for about a month. So far no side effects. I also take a 81mg aspirin daily.
