Hi Edna,

Tinnitus in ET and PV is considered to be due to too many blood cells (platelets in ET and red blood cells in PV) in the blood vessels.
"ET may also cause hearing problems, such as tinnitus (ringing in the ears). These symptoms are believed to be associated with hyperviscosity — thicker, stickier blood — that also contributes to clotting problems"

What causes the ringing/buzzing sound?

I have had bad tinnitus since having high platelets - about 2 years. I have ET and understand it is a common finding. I also have pulsatile tinnitus (you hear your heartbeat in your ears) which I find especially annoying. I have heard that hearing aids may help with tinnitus and have hearing aids for moderate hearing loss but can't say for sure that they help. Over time I think your brain becomes conditioned that your ears ring and it becomes a bit less bothersome. Hope this helps.
