Alternatives To Low Dose Aspirin For High Platelet Count.
Low dose aspirin gives me heartburn. I understand it can negatively effect my kidneys. Any thoughts?
Steve is right, Stephen. You need to be on a medication to reduce the platelets, and if not the aspirin, then something else is necessary. Until then, maybe try Pepcid or one of those that Steve mentioned. Don’t just let it ride!
I also have stomach issues from the aspirin and find taking 10mg of famatodine (pepcid) really helps.
I can only add my own experience. I have taken 81 mg aspirin since I had breast cancer 33 years ago because the chemo sent me into an early menopause. I do take prilosec every day but no problems with kidneys. All of this was under doctor's guidance.
There are other antiplatelet medications such as clopidogrel. There are also anticoagulants such as Eliquis that are considered in some cases. Each one of these medications has its own side effect profile. Suggest you review your treatment options with a MPN Specialist, including adding a PPI (e.g., Nexium).
My kidneys are OK. I just didn't want to hurt them. I've now found I can tolerate the coated version and occasionally have to take antacids. Thanks, everyone for your advice.
