But it's finally getting to me, I've been getting pain on left side of sternum about 45 minutes or so after taking. My platelets are only 491 so aspirin is only meds I'm taking even though Dr wanted me to start hydroxyurea. For now I'm gonna stick with just aspirin but it's bothering me so I'm gonna take a week off and then 1 every 3 days instead of every day for now until stomach or whatever is causing pain stops. Today I didn't take any aspirin and no pain in chest, so I'll take a week off… read more

Mark, everyone has good points. We assume you take enteric coated aspirin which suppose to dissolve in the small intestines and not in the stomach. We are all our own doctors but when your doctor suggested starting on HU and "you know better than your doctor" maybe you need another doctor that you have confidence in and will follow his/her advice. Wishing you the best.

Definitely speak with your Doctor about discontinuing/decreasing your aspirin.

Your platelets may be fine, but there may be other risk factors in play as to why you should be taking it.

Definitely check with your doctor before you take yourself off aspirin…do you take a coated aspirin?

Please consult with your physician prior to decreasing the dosage of any prescribed medication.

I take one chewable 81 mg. aspirin tablet per day, in the morning, and never on an empty stomach. My pre-aspirin meals always include bread or some other food known to absorb stomach acid.

If I experience stomach pain at all, it is generally in the evening, close to bedtime. A glass of soy milk (milk allergy) does wonders.

NOTE: Some people on this site crush their aspirin, stir it into a glass of water, and then drink the solution. They claim this method helps decrease stomach pain. I haven't tried this method, so I can say neither yay nor nay.
