Hi, I Have A Friend Who Utilized 'alternative Medicine'. She Swears By Chlorine Dioxide. Is Anyone Using Chlorine Dioxide?

Is anyone using chlorine dioxide to lower platelets? Or any other reason? Side effects? I'm not going to experiment with the distance just want to hear from people. Thank you, Janet

Hi Janet,

Chlorine dioxide is quite dangerous to use. It can lower red blood cells and affect their function, it also can wipe out the lining of the gastrointestinal tract and affect the liver, give breathing issues if inhaled.
A very small amount is used to sanitise drinking water at public water treatment facilities and to decontaminate buildings, and in very very small amounts it can be used in mouth wash.

Overall, this is a rather dangerous substance.

But I understand why people who have an undiagnosed chronic illness might resort to using dangerous substances.

I remember a discussion between people who had ET and PV left undiagnosed for long (5 to ~10 years) and who resorted to drinking alcohol to cope with all the pain and symptoms. It was tragic how lack of diagnosis impacted their life. One of the side-effects of alcohol is lower bone marrow production of blood cells, so probably this offered some relief. Nowadays they have a diagnosis and treatment, but it still hurts to know they had to self-medicate with a substance known to result in cardiovascular issues and not only.

Best wishes,
Tatiana

And, it's a mute point now, for me. I think my platelets are dropping. Still high but low for me. I'll have labs again in four weeks. The result will indicate if there is a downward trend.

My mom thinks essential thrombocythemia is a mental illness caused by thinking too much about illness and not being positive enough. Yup... she went there. She thinks one can switch on and switch off bad genes via thoughts. 🤦‍♀️
I have no idea where she reads this nonsense, but since my thrombocytosis is inherited (my dad had it too, so did his mom), none of her unscientific theories would apply anyway.
People around us can be quite disrespectful and intolerant towards us having a chronic illness that has no cure. Whether we remind them of humans being mortal, or whether they think our illness makes us less available to their needs, they are bothered by our illness to the level of giving us endangering advice.
As if this illness alone weren't enough.

Hi Sadie, my post was not an endorsement. I'm sorry if you took it that way. I didn't think anyone would be using the substance and was just throwing it out there. My friend was so adamant about its value that I needed to hear from this community that she is over the top. The only supplements I take are vitamins and minerals. Sincerely, Janet

I haven't read that it lowers platelets. Was just wondering if there were any anecdotal experiences.
