Polycythemia Vera is a type of polycythemia with a known genetic cause. Polycythemia means high volume of red blood cells in the blood and can be caused by a number of things such as living at high altitude, lung disease, smoking, sleep apnea and causes not even associated with the bone marrow. Polycythemia Vera is a chronic disorder with an overproduction of blood cells.
